How to install Spotify on Ubuntu 18.04

The use of a computer by a user is very varied. Many use it as a work tool and others for leisure. In this context, Linux every day has applications to satisfy both demands. So this post is about how to install Spotify on Ubuntu 18.04.

Spotify has been a revolution in music consumption on the Internet. As we know, Spotify is an on-demand music company that gives us access to listen to millions of records for a monthly fee.

A great sign that Linux is being taken into account every day by big companies is that there is a Spotify client for Linux and mainly for Ubuntu 18.04 which is perhaps the most popular distribution there is.

Let’s get started.

Spotify on Ubuntu 18.04: Many roads, same goal

Spotify is available for Ubuntu 18.04 in several ways. So you can choose the one that suits you best and each one will be detailed.

However, I must warn you that you only have to choose one installation method as using several can bring problems to the system.

Install Spotify on Ubuntu 18.04 using the DEB package

The first option is a fairly simple one and perhaps the most recommended. It is possible to install Spotify using the terminal and APT via an external repository provided by Spotify.

The main advantage of using this method is that you can keep Spotify updated from the update manager and also with excellent desktop integration.

So, open a terminal and first add the GPG key to the repository with the following command:

:~$ sudo apt-key adv – keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 – recv-keys 4773BD5E130D1D45

Once you enter your password, the GPG key will be added. This key is important to secure the download through the repository. It also tells the system that packages from that repository are safe.

It then proceeds to add the repository in question.

:~$ sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free"

The next step is to update the APT cache with the following command:

:~$ sudo apt update

Finally, install Spotify with the following command:

:~$ sudo apt install spotify-client

This will start the installation and you can run it from the Ubuntu 18.04 main menu.

Also, you can install Spotify using Flatpak

The previous method although it is very safe and effective has something that not all users can like, you have to add an external repository.

To avoid this problem, it is possible to use Flatpak. In case you do not know, Flatpak is a technology that allows you to package a program with its dependencies and isolate it from the system. Therefore, we can run Spotify with the security that we do not modify anything to our system.

If you want to use this method, you have to install Flatpak first. To do this, use the following command:

:~$ sudo apt install flatpak

And then, with a single command, you can install it:

:~$ sudo flatpak install flathub com.spotify.Client

Be aware that the installation will take longer than the previous method so be patient.

Then, you can run it from the main menu. In case it does not appear you can run it with the following command:

:~$ flatpak run com.spotify.Client

But normally this is not necessary and Spotify will be available from the main menu.

Spotify is also available as a snap package

Snap is Flatpak’s main rival. With the addition that this is the creation of Canonical which is the company behind Ubuntu. Therefore, Spotify as a snap package will guarantee smooth integration with Ubuntu.

By default, snap is installed on Ubuntu, so just run this command to install it:

:~$ sudo snap install spotify

The installation will take a while and when it’s done, you can run Spotify from the main menu or with the following command:

:~$ spotify
